Our Farm Friends Aran weight is a 3 ply woolen spun yarn made from our original pet flock. It includes the fiber of our FinnSheep Minnie Purl, Gladys, RBG and Rosa Parks, Gladys’ ewe Targhee/Finn cross lambs Loretta Lynn & Patsy Cline and Orphan Annie. Annie is a Shetland that we rescued from a covid victim. The blend of her toothy fiber with the natural colored Finns makes a lovely tweedy yarn that feels Irish in nature. 50g 78 meter/ 85+ yards Soft Irish tweed style yarn with mixed fibers from our Finn Sheep, Shetland, and Targhee/Finn sheep 3 ply woolen spun 3.5 sts per inch on US size 9-10 needles 14 sts = 4 crochet hook size J 10 RAW undyed grey hues and over dyed varieties with plants, insect shells & food waste One skein = 3.25 bales of hay for the flock (Our critters consume 14 bales of locally grown hay per day from October - May when our pastures are resting. Your support puts hay in the barn and employs both the Mitchell team and the local hay grower.) It doesn't get closer to the sheep than this! Never super washed, our RAW yarn in this collection is straight from the sheep with just gentle washing. It is ready to enjoy natural, or to accept mordant for your own natural dyeing efforts. Spinning oils from the mill have been removed using plant based laundry soap. It's soft and bouncy and ready to sink your happy hands into! This year we also offer a couple of over dyed hues for rich deep shades of our most popular plant based colors. Madder- Madder is from a root and has been used to dye rich reds since the 16 & 17th century, with found textiles retaining their color hundreds of years later! Originating from the subcontinent of India, Central Asia and Europe. *While not as prevalent as Indigo, madder is a natural dye that CROCKS. What does this mean? Red fingers: Read more here Pine Green - from Mulberry This shade of true green has been a goal of Cindy & Sherry since we started out in this botanical dyeing venture. Green is tough, it doesn't seem like it would be but obtaining a true Irish/Kelly/Mossy/Spring Grassy goodness is kind of tricky. There was a lot of dull grey to get to this glorious GREEN. Cindy achieved it with Mulberry and chlorophyll.
